In Which We Get Less Fat…
Competition is a healthy thing… right?
Many of my 6.0222 x 10 ^-23 readers know that my buddy Zigzag and I started a competition in which the first person to lose 10% of their weight would be rewarded by the other with a golf club (a driver, not to exceed $200) as long as that person kept that weight off for a certain amount of time.
Well.
Neither of us made it. We did REALLY well for about 2 months, and now it’s almost three years later.
The yo-yo has been continuous. In Zigzag’s defense, he’s kept off MUCH more of it than I have. I’m dangerously close to being the fattest I’ve ever been, despite my claim that I’m in better shape now.
So, we’re looking to get it started up again. Only this time, the stakes are higher, the scrutiny is more intense, the rewards are… actually, the rewards are the same.
The big difference is that this time around, we’re making things public. I don’t think we’re going to bore you with the minutiae of what we eat every day, but we might tell you about our workout routines, successes, and obstacles. And believe you me, there WILL be obstacles.
So I’m getting the ball rolling. My goal is to lose 10% of my current weight. After that, we’ll take it from there.
On Monday morning, my official weigh in was…. 268.2 lbs. You, as my friend or casual reader, have no idea how hard it is to admit how much I weigh to the world- to this point, only two people knew. I hope you see that it shows how serious I am about doing something to make me healthier. You can help by encouraging us in a positive way. One of the most humiliating things about this is that everyone knows about it, and either a) reminds you about how many calories are in everything when I take a few M&M’s b) tells me what I should or should not be eating. Please know that I’m already in a fragile enough state that even if I laugh it off, I’m sensitive! (Haven’t you figured this out yet?) I can guarantee you I’ve already thought about it more than you can ever know.
So there it is. I’m laying it out there in hopes that it motivates me. Things working in my favor:
1) We’re not starting this during tailgate season… that was dumb.
2) For my birthday (hello, 30) I asked for and received personal training sessions. I will have two per week for the next 6 weeks, starting tomorrow (Wed., 4/2/08). I’m hoping that this will help me see how to work out smarter and become healthier. (And in the process lose weight and become in better shape…)
3) I’m broke, so eating at home and grocery shopping for myself is much easier.
Lastly, I’m not doing any fad diet. Those don’t work in the long run. I just am going to continue to work on eating in moderation, eating three meals a day, and working out at least 4-5 times a week. If I can do these moderate goals, I think I will be able to see immediate and long-term results.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. We will be updating regularly, as soon as we figure out which day is going to be “Weigh-In Day.”
Oh, and you’re welcome. I’m not brave enough to post “before” pictures- no one wants to see that.

1. April 2008 | 21:57 hCongrats on taking this on. We are trying to do it around here too. I just started Bikram yoga and vowed to do it 60 days in a row. I did about 40 of the 60 days, but now I am trying to keep it up 3 times a week. I found the more I did it, the better I ate. Why eat up empty calories when I have to work so hard on it later….Good Luck.
